In January Nature published an article reviewing buzzwords in big science . These include moonshots, roads, frameworks and initiatives. These are all good in focusing thoughts but their definitions are vague. Pillars are another way to define goals. That's also all well and good as you can talk about having a strong base on which your pillars are built. But a key is having an effective architrave / entablature that joins the pillars together. Otherwise you just have free-standing, unconnected columns.
